About Me
Welcome — I’m so grateful you’re here. I’m Melissa, which means “honey bee” in Greek (hence the blog name). I love food — especially when it’s plant-based and shared with good company. Give me a kale Caesar, veggie tacos, cashew cheese and wine, or a decadent vegan cupcake (or two), and I’m in my happy place.
I began blogging as Vegenista in 2009 after my dear friend Andi and her husband went vegan. Having been raised vegetarian, I had plenty to share — so after filling her inbox with recipes and advice, Vegenista was born. The blog grew quickly as I joined a CSA, took cooking classes, experimented in the kitchen, and became more mindful about the products and brands I supported. Over time, the community grew to over 10,000 followers, and the experience shaped so much of who I am today.
Then life shifted. After several personal setbacks, I lost my creative spark and eventually deleted the entire site — thinking I could erase the pain that came with it. I couldn’t. Years later, I realized how much I missed that part of myself.
In 2022, nostalgia struck. I recovered what I could of my old content and, after a life-changing vegan trip to Italy, felt inspired to start again. This space is both a continuation and a new beginning — a place to share favorite recipes, new creations, and reflections on living more consciously and compassionately.
Whether you’re a longtime reader or brand new here, welcome. There’s no judgment about how or what you eat — just encouragement to make mindful, plant-forward choices for your health, the planet, and the animals. All are welcome here. 🐝
